Two emissaries sent by former U.S. President Donald Trump met with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin, where they presented ideas for ending the war in Ukraine, according to Le Monde.fr.
The meeting took place in Moscow, and the envoys arrived carrying what Le Monde.fr describes as "ideas" for a peace settlement. During the discussions, Putin reiterated his existing demands to the American visitors, the French newspaper reported.
The visit comes amid ongoing international efforts to broker a ceasefire or negotiated end to the conflict, which has continued for years. Le Monde.fr did not specify the exact content of the proposals or the nature of Putin's demands in its initial reporting.
The White House has separately confirmed that the envoys discussed what it called "substantial plans" with Putin, according to Le Figaro. Following the Moscow talks, the delegation was scheduled to make an unprecedented visit to Kyiv, the Ukrainian capital, the same outlet reported.
The trip marks a rare direct channel between Trump's circle and the Kremlin at a time when official U.S.-Russia relations remain strained over the war. French broadcaster franceinfo has questioned whether the emissaries can realistically shift the situation on the ground, given the entrenched positions of both sides.
What to watch next: Whether the Kyiv leg of the visit produces any public response from Ukrainian officials, and if either side signals progress toward a formal negotiation framework.
