Residents in parts of France have launched a petition calling on health authorities and local governments to take stronger action against the spread of the tiger mosquito, according to France 3 Régions. The petition reflects growing concern that the insect, known for its potential to transmit diseases, is expanding beyond urban boundaries.

France 3 Régions reports that those behind the petition warn the mosquito "will not stop at the city limits," signaling fears that current control efforts are insufficient. The appeal targets both sanitary agencies and municipal bodies, urging a coordinated response to curb the insect's advance.

The petition comes amid broader attention to the tiger mosquito across France. In Conflans-Sainte-Honorine, local officials have declared what Le Parisien describes as a "war" on the insect, with authorities saying they take the problem very seriously. In the Loire department, the mayor of Saint-Just Saint-Rambert issued an order banning tiger mosquitoes from flying over the commune, a move that BFM notes has not resulted in any mosquito being stopped or fined.

Other communities are also mobilizing. Villefontaine, according to Le Dauphiné Libéré, is working on collective action against the mosquito, while in the Puy-de-Dôme, La Montagne reports that 70 percent of the population now lives in a commune where the insect has established a presence.

The tiger mosquito, an invasive species, has been spreading steadily in France in recent years. Its ability to carry viruses such as dengue and chikungunya has made it a public health priority, though eradication efforts have proven difficult.

What to watch next: whether the petition gains enough signatures to prompt a formal response from national health authorities, and if other towns follow Saint-Just Saint-Rambert's symbolic lead.
