Researchers have finished a complete wiring map of the adult male fruit fly brain, according to Ars Technica. The work, reported by Google Research, marks a connectomics milestone because it covers the whole brain along with the central nervous system of the adult male fly.

Google Research described the effort as mapping the complete male fruit fly brain. Ars Technica framed it as the second complete map of a fruit fly brain, following an earlier full map. The published material does not give a neuron count for this new map, so the exact scale is not stated here.

Coverage of the result has spread across several outlets. Tom's Hardware reported that the map covers more than 166,000 neurons and that software engineers used an AI-powered 3D model of the brain to run Doom, and also to play Super Mario 64. Those demonstrations are described as applications built on top of the model rather than findings about fly biology. Wiley Analytical Science, meanwhile, highlighted that the complete neural map sheds light on how taste drives feeding.

The project sits within connectomics, a field that aims to trace how individual neurons connect into circuits. A full map of a small brain gives researchers a reference for studying how neural wiring produces behavior. Google's blog published visuals intended to show how the male fruit fly's brain map is advancing neuroscience.

What to watch next: how researchers use the map to link specific circuits to behaviors such as feeding, and whether comparable whole-brain maps follow for other species.
