Nvidia has reversed an earlier decision and confirmed that its DLSS 5 upscaling technology will be released for GeForce RTX 40-series video cards, according to Dutch tech outlet Tweakers.

The company had previously signaled that DLSS 5 would be exclusive to newer RTX 50-series hardware, but it has now changed course. Tweakers reports that Nvidia made the announcement amid growing pressure from owners of RTX 40 cards, who argued the hardware was still capable of running the feature.

The confirmation follows a chaotic week for DLSS 5. According to Tweakers, the technology is set for an official launch on Saturday, with early benchmarks already appearing in the basketball title NBA 2K27. However, those tests show a significant performance cost, which IGN Benelux described as "enormous" in its own coverage.

In a separate development, Gameliner reports that modders got their hands on a leaked build of DLSS 5 and tried to force it onto unsupported hardware. The results were poor, with the outlet noting that the unofficial port did not work well.

The RTX 40 series, launched in late 2022, was previously expected to miss out on DLSS 5 entirely. Nvidia's initial stance was that the new frame generation and ray reconstruction techniques required the dedicated AI hardware found only in RTX 50 cards. That position has now been dropped, though Tweakers did not specify whether RTX 40 owners will get the full feature set or a reduced version.

TechGaming also confirmed the news, stating that Nvidia has officially announced DLSS 5 support for the GeForce RTX 40 line.

What remains unclear is whether the performance penalty seen in early RTX 50 benchmarks will be worse on older RTX 40 hardware, and whether Nvidia will extend DLSS 5 to the even older RTX 30 series.
