Italy has recorded 590 cases of West Nile fever, part of a total of 1,285 cases reported across Europe, according to Sky TG24. The figures place Italy at the center of the continent's West Nile outbreak this season.
Separate data from Italy's Higher Health Institute (ISS), reported by Quotidiano Sanità, put confirmed West Nile cases in the country at 594, an increase of 73 from the previous week. The same ISS update reported 265 confirmed dengue cases, up 38 week over week.
Coverage of the outbreak has not been limited to one region. YouTG.NET reported that cases have appeared across Italy, not only in Oristano, with one official quoted saying the country should prepare for the coming years. The Corriere Adriatico reported that Italy leads Europe in West Nile cases and that Chikungunya, Zika and Usutu virus have also been detected.
Sky TG24's European total of 1,285 cases provides the broader frame for Italy's national count. The two figures come from different reporting streams — Sky TG24's Europe-wide tally and the ISS's national surveillance update — and were published on the same day.

Mosquito-borne virus surveillance typically intensifies through late summer and early autumn, when vector activity peaks. The ISS updates its arbovirus figures weekly, and the gap between the Sky TG24 European count and the ISS national total reflects the different sources and cut-off dates behind each number.
The next ISS weekly bulletin will show whether Italy's case count continues to climb, and whether dengue and other arbovirus detections follow the same trend.
