Punjab is facing a surge in H1N1 infections, with confirmed cases crossing the 220 mark and the state recording its first suspected swine flu death, according to multiple Indian news outlets.
The suspected fatality was reported in the Moga district, where five additional people have also tested positive for the virus, The Times of India reported. NDTV and India Today both confirmed that Punjab's H1N1 case count has now exceeded 200, with the first suspected death adding to growing public health concerns in the region.
The reports, aggregated by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, indicate that the outbreak is intensifying across the northern Indian state. Health authorities have not yet officially confirmed whether the death in Moga was definitively caused by swine flu, as the case remains listed as suspected, according to Hindustan Times.

The surge in Punjab comes amid a broader rise in swine flu activity across India, as noted by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance in its coverage of the developing situation. The vaccine alliance highlighted the regional spread of the virus as a point of concern for public health officials monitoring seasonal influenza patterns.
Local health departments are likely to ramp up surveillance and testing efforts in the affected districts to contain further transmission. The coming weeks will show whether the suspected death is confirmed and if case numbers continue to climb in Punjab and neighboring areas.
