Ghana's 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) cohort recorded its highest automatic placement rate to date, according to GBC Ghana Online. The state broadcaster reported the figure on Saturday, 12 September 2026.
The placements are handled through the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS), the mechanism that assigns BECE graduates to senior high schools.
The record rate has not quieted criticism of how that system works. GhanaWeb published comments from media personality MzGee questioning the placement process, framed around who is manipulating whom. Ghana's education minister has also acknowledged that problems exist with senior high school placements, according to UA.NEWS.
Other reports point to grievances at the individual level. Asaase Radio reported that a parent alleged being asked for GHC15,000 in connection with an admission to St Louis Senior High School. Separately, UA.NEWS reported that a school principal complained about changes made to student placement.

Together, the coverage suggests that a strong headline placement figure and public dissatisfaction with the process are running side by side. The automatic placement rate measures how many candidates were placed without manual intervention; it does not, on its own, address complaints about fairness, transparency or demands for money tied to specific schools.
The education minister's acknowledgement of placement problems indicates the matter is on the ministry's agenda. What to watch next: whether the ministry responds to the specific allegations, including the reported GHC15,000 demand, and whether it outlines changes to the CSSPS process.
