The Ghana cedi weakened against the US dollar on Wednesday, September 9, trading at GHS12.15 on the retail forex market, according to modernghana.com. On the Bank of Ghana (BoG) interbank market, the currency was quoted at GHS11.43 to the dollar on the same day.
Modernghana.com reported the daily exchange rate figures, which show a slight depreciation from the previous day's interbank rate. On September 8, the cedi sold at GHS12.15 on the forex market and GHS11.40 on the BoG interbank platform, according to separate reports from modernghana.com and Pulse Ghana.
The BoG interbank rate is the official reference rate used by banks for large transactions, while the retail forex market rate reflects what individuals and businesses pay at currency exchange bureaus. The gap between the two rates indicates the premium charged on the open market.

The central bank has expressed confidence in the cedi's stability in the coming months. According to Adomonline.com, the Bank of Ghana expects the currency to remain stable despite an anticipated rise in demand for imports tied to the Christmas season. Higher import demand typically increases pressure on local currencies as businesses seek dollars to pay for foreign goods.
The cedi's performance will be closely watched in the weeks ahead as importers ramp up purchases ahead of the holiday period. Traders and analysts will look to BoG interventions and foreign exchange reserves as key indicators of whether the central bank can hold the line on its stability forecast.
