Estonia's incoming defense minister said he will not interfere with the work of the commander of the Estonian Defense Forces, according to ERR. The statement, reported Monday, signals that the new minister intends to leave operational military matters to the EDF's leadership rather than involve himself in the commander's duties.

ERR also reports that Estonia's prime minister said the incoming minister, Herem, knows where he has more work to do in the defense portfolio. The prime minister's comment suggests the government expects the new minister to focus on specific priorities within the ministry.

The leadership transition comes amid other changes at the Ministry of Defense. According to ERR, Estonia's government has dismissed the ministry's permanent secretary. Separately, ERR reported that former high-ranking EDF officers have raised questions about who is running the government in Estonia.

On the question of support for Ukraine, the future defense minister said that a fear of making mistakes must not prevent Estonia from assisting Ukraine, according to Yahoo. That position places him alongside Estonia's existing policy of backing Kyiv.

The incoming minister's pledge on the EDF commander's independence addresses a sensitive boundary in civil-military relations: how much a political appointee should direct the armed forces. His remarks indicate he plans to keep that line intact.

What to watch next is whether the new minister's stated approach holds once he takes office, and how the ministry's leadership changes affect Estonia's defense planning.
