YOUR DAILY SPIRIT WORKOUT

(Build Spiritual Muscle)

Friday, 11 September

TO THE BIBLE – 1 Timothy 4:7-8

“But reject profane and old wives’ fables, and exercise yourself toward godliness. For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come.”

Friday afternoon felt deceptively calm.

The group chat stayed quiet. Tyler kept his distance. The confrontation from earlier in the week had not reignited. On the surface, everything looked settled. Underneath, Maya could still sense the unfinished tension—like a weight that had been set down but not removed.

Jordan met her at the usual table after the final bell. He looked more relaxed than he had in days, but there was something restless in the way he tapped his pen against his notebook.

“I’ve been thinking,” he said. “This week was intense. The project, the chat, the library steps… We handled it. But I only really prayed or paid attention when things got hard. The rest of the time I just… coasted.”

Maya nodded. She had noticed the same pattern in herself before.

“That’s the problem,” she said. “Spiritual muscle doesn’t get built in the emergency. It gets built in the daily workout. The Bible says bodily exercise profits a little, but exercising yourself unto godliness is profitable for everything—now and later.”

Jordan leaned back. “So what does that actually look like? Because showing up only when there’s a crisis clearly isn’t enough.”

“It looks like consistency,” Maya answered. “Praying in tongues even on quiet days. Staying in the Word when nothing is on fire. Not waiting until you feel like it or until someone else is going. The church, the Word, the time you give your spirit—those are the reps. Miss enough of them and you stay weak even if you managed one hard moment well.”

She paused, then added, “This quiet from Tyler might not last. Something else will come up. If we only train when the pressure is already on, we’ll keep starting from behind.”

Jordan was silent for a while. Around them students drifted out of the building, talking about weekend plans. The normal noise of an ending school week filled the hallway.

Finally he said, “I’ve been treating it like a rescue tool instead of a daily practice. That has to change.”

Maya smiled slightly. “Then start today. Not when the next problem shows up. Now.”

They sat a few minutes longer as the building emptied. The social tension had not fully cleared. Tyler’s silence still felt temporary. The watching eyes of the class had not completely looked away. But for the first time, the focus had shifted from simply surviving the next confrontation to building the strength that would make the next one different.

Spiritual muscle was not formed in the spotlight. It was formed in the quiet repetitions no one else saw.
