THE POWER OF “THANK YOU”

(The Two Most Powerful Words)

Thursday, 10 September

TO THE BIBLE – 1 Thessalonians 5:18

“in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”

The day after the library steps felt strangely quiet.

No new messages in the group chat. No fresh comments in the hallway. Tyler passed Maya and Jordan once near the lockers and looked the other way. The confrontation had ended without a scene, but the silence that followed carried its own weight. People were still watching to see what would happen next.

At lunch Jordan sat down across from Maya and pushed a bottle of water toward her.

“You didn’t have to stay yesterday,” he said. “You could have let me handle it alone. Thanks for not letting the moment turn into something worse.”

The words were simple. Almost awkward. But they landed with more force than either of them expected.

Maya looked at the water bottle, then at him. “You’re welcome. And thank you for choosing not to match his tone. That mattered.”

Jordan gave a short nod and opened his own drink. For a few minutes they ate in comfortable quiet. Around them the cafeteria continued its usual noise, but at their table the atmosphere had shifted. Something small and deliberate had been planted.

Later, between classes, Maya held the door for a junior who was struggling with an armful of books. The girl looked surprised and mumbled a quick thanks. Maya answered without thinking, “You’re welcome,” and kept walking. The exchange lasted three seconds. It still felt important.

By the end of the day the larger tension with Tyler remained unresolved. He hadn’t apologised. The group chat hadn’t been cleared. The social air still carried a faint charge. Yet Maya noticed that the more she practised saying “thank you”—for notes shared, for doors held, for Jordan’s decision the day before—the less room there was for residual frustration to settle.

After the final bell Jordan caught up with her near the gates.

“I’ve been thinking,” he said. “Yesterday could have gone a lot of ways. Most of them bad. I’m glad it didn’t.” He paused, then added, “Thank you. Again.”

Maya smiled. “You’re allowed to say it more than once.”

They parted ways. The conflict with Tyler was not finished. The watching eyes of the class had not fully looked away. But something stronger was being built in the middle of the unfinished tension: a habit of gratitude that refused to wait for perfect circumstances before it spoke.

Two words. Small enough to overlook. Strong enough to change the atmosphere.
