Electric vehicles are set to reduce China's oil consumption by 56 million tonnes in 2026, according to ProFinance.

The outlet reported the figure on Friday, September 11, 2026, framing it as a measure of how far electric cars have already displaced petroleum demand in the world's largest auto market.

The projection comes alongside separate reporting on Beijing's broader automotive ambitions. Finance Mail and Interfax both reported that China intends to join the ranks of the world's leading automobile powers, with Interfax putting the target date at 2030. 3DNews reported that China also plans widespread deployment of autonomous transport by the same year.

There are already signs of the shift in consumer demand. Kursiv Media reported that electric vehicles have pushed gasoline-powered cars out of China's top ten best-selling models.

Taken together, the reports point to a market where electrification has moved from a policy goal to a measurable force in energy consumption. The 56 million tonne figure attributed to ProFinance quantifies one consequence: less oil burned on Chinese roads as battery-powered cars take share from internal combustion models.

What to watch next is whether the 2026 oil displacement estimate holds as China's 2030 automotive and autonomous driving targets come into focus.
