Bamanga Tukur, a former national chairman of Nigeria's Peoples Democratic Party, has died at the age of 90, according to Premium Times Nigeria. The Guardian Nigeria News reports that Adebayo has mourned him, saying the country has lost what he described as a political institution.

Tukur was buried in Adamawa State, Punch Newspapers reports, publishing photographs from the funeral. TheCable, in an obituary, described him as a workaholic who led the country's port authority and noted that he "would have made an excellent farmer."

Tributes came from across Nigeria's political class. THISDAYLIVE reports that President Tinubu, former President Jonathan, Abbas, northern governors, Fintiri and Makinde were among those who mourned the elder statesman.

Tukur's death removes one of the older figures associated with the PDP's founding era, a party he later chaired. The statements from sitting and former officeholders, along with the burial in his home state, reflect the reach of a career that spanned business and public administration as well as party politics.

Further details of his life and the arrangements following his death are expected to emerge as family, associates and the party issue additional statements.
